Welcome to our blog Gathered Connections, where we highlight other local businesses that can enhance your gathered experience. This issue will spotlight on Sweatnest_Bakery. I had the pleasure to interview the owner Ms. Sylvia Alston. I have had the pleasure of indulging in some of her delicious sweets, and I will tell you if you want a slice of home and heaven in one bite this is the bakery for your next gathering. When asked how her company could create a gathering experience, she responded:

“Owning a bakery is all about a gathering experience. Desserts have a way of bringing people together. My family and my friends are always saying "Let's just get together over drinks and dessert". Desserts, especially a good piece of cake or a slice of pie or maybe a spoon full of peach cobbler can create moments that last a lifetime. Think about one of your favorite memories, now think about if dessert was involved. In some shape or form, something sweet was in that memory. That's why I enjoy making desserts that make memories. .”

Gathered Night In is a space for creativity and when asked how do you create an environment of creativity she explained " I'm honestly not a creative person. Well, let me say, it's hard for me to implement my creative thoughts. Creativity can happen in any environment. Part of being creative is having a plan. We can't be successful without a tangible plan. What you put into is what you will get out of it. "

Create,Encourage, Partner

Not only does this space promote creativity, we want to encourage entrepreneurship and partner with each spotlighted business in order to give you an opportunity to shop, and support local and create a community. The DC, Maryland and Virginia area is full of amazing businesses that can provide a variety of options. I wanted to dive in and find out what made Ms. Alston want to become an entrepreneur. As she explained " I cannot tell of an exact date, but I can definitely tell you of a feeling. I always felt like I needed to do more, not for money but for fun. I remember having a conversation with my mother and telling her how I wanted to start a business. At that time, it was a daycare center, then I wanted a clothing boutique, and finally, it was a bakery. Well, I did think about an ice cream truck at one time LOL. After failed attempts at my previous ideas, I gave up on being an entrepreneur. It was during that time of giving up that God showed me, he had not forgotten about my dreams. So I guess you can say, I was born with the bug. My father and mother owned restaurants in D.C. growing up, so I was always around entrepreneurs." I also wanted to know what keeps her motivated? Ms. Alston stated that "Prayer is always the best encouragement and to stay motivated I just think about failure and how I hate to fail. We all get to a point when we are tired and want to give up, but the best way to overcome that is to make sure you have people in your life that won't let you give up. "
